Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to question specific calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
