Micky van de Ven Double Halts The Toffees' Run at Brand New Home Ground

Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to review the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of the field

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
