Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying these medications must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the way of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
